Be sure to write down specific evidence from either your lesson plan or your memory of your enactment for each assessment you give. Use a highlighter to identify areas of your teaching/lesson that were either below standard or that you feel needs improvement.
a. Review your school improvement document(s). (If you forgot them, download a SALT visit.)

Formulate a professional development goal based the needs that you have identified. This goal should be:
measurable/observable
should lead to improvement of teaching, student achievement, and/or improvement of learning environment.
should describe new knowledge or skills that you will acquire and how that knowledge/skill will affect the school/district setting.
linked to applicable Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards and elements, e.g. RIBTS 2.4.
In the space below, describe your professional development goal. In a second paragraph, use the information above to provide a rationale for your goal by explaining the personal need that it will address as well as how addressing this goal benefits your students and your school.
I. Professional Development Goal
My professional development goal is to provide a safe focused classroom environment that will be cohesive within the school community. Clear behavior standards will allow the students to understand the consequences of their actions as well as provide a safe community in which students can learn without the distractions of safety insecurities(RIBTS 6.1 and 6.2). This can be aided with an advisory program in which students have a specific individual that they get to know and rely on for any issues related to their learning and the school community in general(RIBTS 9.1). The advisory program would provide the staff with information on the sense of community the students feel in the school and classroom environments in which they participate, as well as any safety or educational problems the students percive in themselves or others. This more personal information may aid in identifying behavior and educational issues that can then be addressed. While not the only route, advisory may help identify students who struggle with specific tasks/goals. In the case of math remediation, and any other area, it can then start the process of finding specific ways to aid their learning (RIBTS 4.1).
These goals will provide for a more cohesive safe environment in which the overall student performance improves as the environment in which the learning is done will be improved. To do this research on behavior management and advisory will be key. The beginnings of the PAWS program (an advisory program that is currently being developed at WMS) will need to be vetted and tested to find if it truly will provide for a safer more secure environment where the students will be able to rely on specific individuals for aid. This could work with a behavioral management program, akin to the english remediation program in place now, to provide a better ocmmunity feeling and safe haven of learning for all students. Overall the improvement of the school environment/community will allow for the students overall improvement.
Now that you have a PD goal, think about what type of learning opportunities you will participate in to address your needs. Use these links to investigate learning options:
Based on what you have found out, write a 1-2 paragraph narrative outlining at least two ways (PD categories) you will engage in engage in by the end of your first year of teaching. For each activity, explain how you think it will address the need that you have identified.
II. Professional Development Plan
One way in which I can work towards a behavioral management plan that encompasses all the classrooms is to begin by finding others interested in this type of focus within the school system. The Reading catch program (which I do not have the name of) also has a math catch component, and a behavioral management aspect. Both of these programs have gotten interest by various staff at the school yet have not been implemented. I would hope to gather staff together who are interested in pursuing the behavioral management aspect of the program that is already in place. This would involve me in the development and implementation of a new aspect of the program that is already in place. In doing this I would hope to approach the administrative staff with the concerns of the group in the hope of working towards learning more of the behavior component to present to the staff as a possibility to implement at the school.
To work towards implementation would include the workshops and training sessions involved with understanding the development of the behavioral management at the WMS. The training sessions would expand my knowledge of the catch programs that they offer and would specifically hone my knowledge of the behavior management program. I would hope to work with my fellow interested staff members at these conferences or workshops. If they were unable to attend then I would hope to have a group meeting at the school and to go over each aspect with them and how it would work in our specific cases. By working through the process with a specific set of cases would allow us to decide if this program is really the one that would most benefit our students safety and community atmosphere.
Advisory aid would be in the matter of keeping up to date with the current Advisory committee. They have just developed a PAWS program this past year and have yet to introduce it to the staff for implementation. My goal would be to attend the March PD day at which the program would be addressed and come ready with personal queries developed from personal readings and discussion with other staff members. As it is too late to participate on the committee itself I would just have to be prepared with an open mind as to how I feel the plan would function as a art of the community. I could also discuss the programs that are established in other schools with past classmates, and co-workers. Being fully prepared for future presentations and gathering data through contacts and personal readings of Educational articles, reports, and books.
In my own classroom I would foster the same ideas which the community was pursuing. During my first year I would hope to have colleagues with whom I could trouble shoot behavioral issues with as that is my main concern in providing a safe focused classroom. I would hope to be able to work within a team on improving my lessons to cohesively work within the team and the community's goals without causing rifts in an established working group. I would utilize my colleagues prior knowledge and wisdom of the community, in which I am now working, to aid in my own melding into the team.
